Job Description
Software Engineer
We are looking for an experienced software engineer to take significant responsibility within a small and busy software team in the UK. The role will suit someone with at least 2-4 years of industrial experience (or equivalent), wanting to develop a career in a high-tech industry. Strong knowledge of C++ or .NET is essential.
We are looking for an experienced and confident developer to take significant responsibility within a small and busy software team. The role will suit a Software Engineer with at least 2-4 years of industrial experience (or equivalent), who is keen to develop a career in a high-tech industry.
The role will involve estimation, design, planning as well as programming, testing and documentation. You will have the opportunity to work with engineers and scientists in finding technical solutions which may involve both hardware and software components.
You will be expected to contribute to and facilitate team collaboration and agile practices and to share your skills with the team and to support other software engineers.
You will work on projects that involve programming Windows applications in C++ and .NET. It also includes control of lasers and other hardware, e.g. via serial communications protocols. Our software contains some complex logic and mathematical elements, including 3D geometry and mathematical modelling.
After sufficient experience you may also be expected to support the sales team and support engineers with installations and configuration either on site or occasionally at a customer site.
The role reports to the Lead Software Developer and is supported by a team of like-minded software engineers. The role is UK based out of headquarters in Oxfordshire,
- Programming in C++ and in .NET using WinForms
- Estimating time required for work, and playing a key role in selecting items for sprints
- Working closely within a small team to deliver functionality
- To take responsibility for understanding the requirements by discussing with product owner and other software and hardware engineers
- Engaging team members in decision making
- Balancing, and where possible aligning, short-term requirements with longer-term goals
- Writing automated tests and aid validation of the software in context on a system
- Updating the user documentation
- Sharing your knowledge and to be ready to learn from others
- Helping to inform the roles and processes in our growing agile team
Education, Experience & Skills
- At least 2-4 years of industrial experience (or equivalent)
- Knowledge of C++, . Net languages (VB .NET) and WinForms
- Proven ability to deliver pragmatic solutions
- Strong understanding of software architecture
- Strong mathematical capabilities, (good A level maths as a bare minimum, a degree in a STEM subject would be beneficial)
- Ability to understand physical systems
- A passion for creating great User Experience
- Experience of any of the following would be advantageous:
- Mathematical modelling
- 3D geometry
- Subversion
- Unit testing / regression testing
- Multi-threading and concurrent programming
- Image analysis
- Embedded programming, e.g. FPGAs/PICs
The Person
- Should readily take ownership of their tasks and complete them with their very best endeavours and to the best of their ability
- Should fit comfortably in a very technical environment with a highly qualified and experienced staff
- Should enjoy working in a small organisation where he/she has a considerable level of responsibility, but also needs to perform basic tasks on occasion
- Willingness to support other aspects of the business or deliver other tasks as the company may require
- Will enjoy working closely with others
- Will be prepared to sell their ideas to the team while being willing to compromise and accept different views
- Possesses a "can do" attitude
- Be able to work to strict deadlines either individually or as part of a team
- Candidates must have legal right to work in the UK
- Up to 6 days per month working from home at manager's discretion
